University of Washington -  Capstone Sponsor for Affordable Training

June 25, 2020

Montes De Oca believes would-be pilots can have real stick and rudder experiences by flying an air vehicle by remote control, similar to the way people fly drone quadcopters.

He brought together a team of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering majors and one physics major to build such an aircraft system as the capstone project of their senior year.

Here’s how it would work. Through a camera on the air vehicle, the pilot wearing first-person goggles on the ground would have a cockpit view and full radio control of the flight. The pilot could practice taking off, landing and all the turning maneuvers. A flight instructor could watch in real time, provide instructions and, if needed, take over.

The system would not replace required flight hours, said Montes De Oca, but it would be a safe and affordable way for trainees to gain proficiency.

Aviation partners:

Sponsors included YellowJET Aviation Services, a charter and flight training school for commercial and high-end private pilots at Paine Field in Everett. Owner-operator Kurt Cantarano offered its online ground school for free to members of the capstone team and aviation club. Cantarano said he’s excited to work with UW Bothell and enjoys helping students who are interested in aviation. Montes De Oca also works at YellowJET as an instructor and plans to continue as the liaison with UW Bothell on the project.

Lauren Dowdell Wins the Woman's Aviation Scholarship

January 22, 2020

I had the pleasure of being instructed by Kurt Cantarano through my Private Pilot. Kurt prepared me well for my Private Pilot check ride and was a crucial part to my acceptance in the Central Washington University flight program. He has prepared me to fly at the top of my peer group flying several aircrafts including the Glass Cockpit Ranger VAR7, Cessna 172, Cessna 150, and now the Piper Archers at Central. My training with Kurt included several long cross-country flights. He invests time and knowledge into his students and grants us unique opportunities that you will not see at any other flight school. I am now pursuing my degree in Professional Pilot- First Officer with a minor in Aviation Management. Kurt helped me receive a large financial scholarship even after our training had ceased, and we keep in touch often. Kurt cares about his students and works hard to help us succeed. When receiving instruction by Kurt you are guaranteed to receive authentic, compassionate, intelligent instruction that has been perfected by years in the aviation field. I would highly recommend Kurt as an instructor.

The Purpose of a Pre-Takeoff Checklist

November 2, 2017
To check of the engine, controls, systems, instruments, and avionics prior to flight

  • The idea is to find any problems before taking off
  •  In general, follow the manufacturer’s instruction laid out in the Pilots Operating Handbook to know what to check, the reasons to check each item, how to detect a malfunction, and to ensure the aircraft is in a safe operating condition as recommended by the manufacturer
